На значительных расстояниях от эпицентров сейсмические волны являются упругими волнами.Продольные сейсмические волны (cм. рис. , a) переносят изменения объёма в среде - сжатия и растяжения. Колебания в них совершаются в направлении распространения. Поперечные сейсмические волны (cм. рис. , б) не образуют в среде объёмных изменений и представляют собой колебания частиц, происходящие перпендикулярно направлениям распространения волны. Скорость продольных волн больше поперечных. Наблюдения на поверхности Земли над распространением сейсмических волн позволяют исследовать строение Земли. На рисунке изображены соответственно одна поперечная сейсмическая волна ( поверхностная волна), прямая волна, распространяющаяся от сейсмического источника (точки взрыва) к приемнику по поверхности земли, а также отраженная и преломленная волны.
